Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel Braai: Which Should You Choose?

Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel Braai: Which Should You Choose?

One of the first choices you will make when buying a Home Fires braai is the steel it is built from: mild steel or 304 stainless steel. Both are excellent and both will last for years with the right care — but they suit different budgets, locations and maintenance habits. Here is how to decide.

Mild steel braais

Mild steel is the traditional choice and what most of our range is built from. Home Fires use A-grade hot-rolled mild steel up to 3.5 mm thick, which gives superb heat retention and a reassuringly solid, long-lasting unit. It is also the more affordable option for a given size.

The one thing to know: mild steel can develop surface rust if it is left exposed to a lot of moisture and is not looked after. The good news is that this is easily prevented and easily treated — a little seasonal care effectively gives you a ‘brand-new’ braai each year. We cover exactly how in our Products Explained guide.

Stainless steel braais

If you want the lowest-maintenance option, 304 stainless steel is the answer. It is highly resistant to corrosion, which makes it ideal for coastal locations, exposed gardens and anyone who would rather not think about upkeep. Our Home Fires Free Standing 304 Stainless Steel Braai delivers that peace of mind in a striking, premium finish.

Stainless costs more than mild steel for the equivalent size — but for the right setting, the reduced maintenance and longevity can be well worth it.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose stainless steel if you are near the coast, your braai will be permanently exposed to the elements, or you simply want minimal maintenance.
  • Choose mild steel if you want the best value and the strongest heat retention, and you are happy to give the unit a little care once a season (or keep it under cover).

Whichever you choose, keeping the braai covered or under a pergola when not in use will extend its life — see our care and installation guide for more.
